The production of plant-based alternatives to animal leather generates up to 60 times lower carbon footprint.
The United Nations estimates that cattle farming accounts for approximately 19% of global greenhouse gas emissions, placing it at the heart of alarming climate change issues.
According to the American NGO Collective Fashion Justice, producing a single pair of cow leather shoes emits at least 66 kg of CO₂ – the equivalent of charging 8,417 smartphones!
Additionally, Leather Panel, a global forum run by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), states that a pair of cow leather shoes can have a carbon footprint 7 times higher than shoes made from plastic.
Carbon Footprint of Plant-Based Leather
On average, plant-based leather alternatives generate 15 times less CO₂ emissions compared to traditional animal leather.
Some plant-based materials achieve even more impressive reductions:
- 19x lower carbon footprint – cactus leather production
- 42x lower carbon footprint – leather made from orange and cactus waste
- 60x lower carbon footprint – apple leather production
Switching to plant-based leather significantly reduces the fashion industry’s environmental impact while offering sustainable and cruelty-free alternatives.
